I think there’s not one song like this one. If you hear just the chord progression without the melody, you might ask yourself what’s going on here. But when you add the melody something truly divine is happening. So the title of the song is a perfect match. I read somewhere that he had to fight for the title of the song with record companies big wigs because they thought it’s not pop enough and rather gospel-like but fortunately he convinced them to accept - God Only Knows - Apple Music | YouTube Music.
I have to mention Bryan Adams’ version that really helped me to find my version somewhere in-between the original and his version. Because when I perform it on piano it leans more towards this performance.
